The Big Event Raises $155,000 for Central Oregon Youth

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon, a program of J Bar J Youth Services, brought the community together on October 1st for The Big Event at Hawkeye & Huckleberry Lounge. Our first celebration at the venue featured dinner by Chef Carlos Anthony, heartfelt stories, and generous support for local youth, raising $155,000 to support one-to-one mentoring, Big Futures, and the CARES (Creating Access, Resources, Experiences, and Support) Program.

Guests participated in live and silent auctions, and a paddle raise to support youth and families. Big Sister Sue and Little Sister Evelyn helped bring the mission to the stage as they presented the live auction. Two staff members from Big Brothers Big Sisters of America also traveled to Central Oregon to attend and support our local agency.

One of the evening’s most meaningful moments was a powerful video featuring Big Sister Stephanie and Little Sister Layla, who also spoke on stage about their match. Their story showed what community support makes possible: a trusted relationship, someone to turn to, and encouragement to imagine a future full of possibilities.

The evening also celebrated Big Champion Award recipients Mark Capell and Kim Evered, recognizing their years of leadership, advocacy, and generosity.

Kim began her BBBSCO journey as a Big Sister to Shayla. Their match lasted six and a half years, and they remain an important part of each other’s lives today. Kim has served on the BBBSCO Advisory Council for more than a decade, including many years as Chair, and continues to be a dedicated advocate and supporter.

Mark has been a Big Brother three times, with his most recent match lasting nearly four years. Since joining the Advisory Council in 2019, he has supported BBBSCO through his time, leadership, and generosity. A retired business owner and former Bend City Council member, Mark has brought his commitment to community service to his work on behalf of local youth.

BBBSCO also played a special role in bringing Mark and Kim together. They met at a BBBS event, where Kim encouraged Mark to join the Advisory Council, while Mark was hoping for a date. Married for four years, they continue to champion mentoring together.

Precious Byrd closed out the evening with live music, wrapping up a celebration filled with connection and community spirit.

Funds raised will help build and sustain one-to-one mentoring relationships, support young people as they plan for education and careers through Big Futures, and help families access resources and opportunities through CARES. From gas cards and pantry supplies to enrichment experiences and family activities, this support helps remove barriers and keep young people connected.

Thank you to our guests, sponsors, donors, volunteers, and partners for making The Big Event possible and investing in the futures of Central Oregon youth.
